          The son of Kyle Rote, an all-American college football player at Southern Methodist University who played in the National Football League for the New York Giants.

          The younger Rote briefly played college football at Oklahoma State before he transferred to the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he played soccer and track and field.

          Kyle Rote Jr entered ABC's made-for-TV sports contest as America's best-known soccer player in a publicity-starved sport.

          He also played for the Houston Hurricane in a pro career that ended in 1979. Rote became the player/coach of the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1983-'84.

          A Dallas native whose first love was tackle football (he is the son of year NFL veteran Kyle Rote), he was a late-comer to soccer.

          Rote earned five caps playing for Team U.S.A. between 1973 and '75.
